Knitted Winter Set >>> Pletena Zimni Souprava

My niece is having a baby soon and not too long ago I finished the promised winter set for the baby. Since she lives in Australia and she will be giving a birth to a baby in September, the baby will be a winter baby. I knitted a sweater for her baby already, but the more I looked at it the more I disliked it. So I took it apart and I knitted it all over again. Then I decided to make pants to go with the sweater. I chose neutral earth inspired multicolor yarn, because we do not know if it will be a boy or a girl.

Approximate Step-by-Step Instructions:

Material: Lion Brand - Homespun - Sierra
Needles: size 6

SWEATER

Back:

1. CO 39 stitches
2. - 5.  K2, P1, [*K1, P1] - repeat entire row except last stitch which you will slip onto needle
6. - 38. (or few more rows) - K all even rows, P all odd rows
39. - 42. BO 3, 3, 4 stitches on each end. The rest ot the stitches (the neck part)  move to a stitch holder (or double pointed needle like these or these)

Front:

1. CO 23 stitches
2. - 5.  K2, P1, [*K1, P1] - repeat entire row except last stitch which you will slip onto needle
6. - 38. (or few more rows) - K all even rows, P all odd rows - EXCEPT 5 (first or last) stitches on ONE side will be always P1-K1-P1-K1 and slip last stitch and when you turn your knitting and will be starting new row you will K2-P1-K1-P1...  
Note: one side will have these 5 stitches on left side, the second one will have these 5 stitches on right side. If yo are making the sweater for baby boy make every 12th row button hole on left side (on the 5 stitch pattern), for a girl make the button hole on the right side.
39. - 42. BO 3, 3, 4 stitches for sholder and slip off 4, 4, 4 stitches onto a stitch holder for neck area.

BABY PANTS

Make two identical halves.

1. CO 35 stitches
2. - 5. each row - K2, P1, *K1, P1 - repeat from *, last stitch slip on the needle, turn and start same as prev. row

6. - 21.  Knit all even rows, Purl all odd rows, but BO one stitch on each end every 8th row (total 4 stitches)
22. K all the stitches and at the end add by Casting On 2 extra stitches

When you have 2 identical parts (halves) - move them either onto double pointed needles or onto round needles.

23. - 50. (or few more rows) K all around
51. make even number of holes for tie (waist area)
52. - 56. K1, P1
57. BO

To make a tie (string) - crochet a chain from double yarn as long as you need. Weave the string through the holes. Instead of holes you can knit several more rows of K1-P1 pattern, fold it in half, sew it (leaving a little space/hole) and insert an elastic into the waist area.
