Crochet Kid's Espadrilles - Free Pattern

I have been knitting and crocheting baby shoes on and off for quite some time. Today, I decided to start working on baby espadrilles, and at the same time make a YouTube video and write a free pattern. It will be a very time consuming project, but fun because I LOVE the look of crocheted espadrilles.

Each sole needs to be doubled - it would be too thin otherwise. I think these soles could be even tripled or quadrupled - if anyone of you will do it, let me know how successful you were with attaching the top and heel parts to the three or four layers of the sole :-)

My initial idea was to attach the connecting string from heel part to the middle of the front, but later on changed the idea into a tie, which will help these espadrilles stay on the foot better, because you can control the tension with your child's growing foot.

Espadrille videos for both (right & left) handed crocheters are HERE.

Huge "thank yous" to all my wonderful followers for sharing my projects.
Enjoy, and have fun knitting or crocheting :-)

Step-by-Step:

SOLES:
make 4

color #1 (light brown)

Foundation: ch14

Row 1         ch3, 3 dc into 4th chain st from hook, 1 dc into next 12 ch st, 7 dc into next st; next crochet 1 dc in the next 12 sts on the opposite side of initial foundation chain, 3 dc in next st, join
Row 2         ch 3, 1 dc in same stitch, 2 dc in each of next 3 st, 1 hdc into each of next 5 sts, 1 sc into each of next 7 sts, 2 sc into each of next 7 sts, 1 sc into each of next 7 sts, 1 hdc into each of next 5 sts, 2 dc into each of next 3 sts, join
Row 3          ch3, 1 dc into same st, *[1 dc into next st, 2 dc int next st]* - 3x; 1 hdc into each of next 6 sts, 1 sc into each of next 9 sts,  *[1 sc into next st, 2 sc into next]* - 4x; 1 sc into next st, 1 sc into each of next 9 sts, 1 hdc into each of next 6 sts, *[2 dc into next st, 1 dc int next st]* - 3x; join

Place 2 soles with wrong side toward each other and slip stitch them together with light brown yarn (insert your hook between two stitch of both soles at the same time and pull yarn through, then insert the hook between two stitches of both soles and pull yarn through soles and the stitch - repeat all around the perimeter.) Do the same with the other pair. Weave in all the ends.

TOP OF THE ESPADRILLES:

color #2 (red)

Leaving a long tail make a foundation of ch20

Row 1             (RS)ch1, 1 sc into each st to end, turn
Row 2-3          ch1, 1 sc into each st to end, turn
Row 4             (WS) ch1, 1 sc into each of next 3 sts, skip 2 sts, 5 dc into 3rd st, skip 2 st, 1 sc into                               3rd st, skip 2 st, 5 dc into 3rd st, skip 2 st, 1 sc into 3rd st, 1 sc into last 4 sts, turn
Row 5             (RS) ch3, 1 dc into next 3 sts, ch2, 1 sc into 3rd st of the fan, ch2, 1 dc into sc fom                                 prev row, ch2, 1 sc into 3rd st of the fan, ch2, 1 dc into last 4 st, turn
Row 6             (WS) ch3, dc3tog, 5 dc into sc st from prev row, 1 sc into dc from prev row, 5 dc into                           sc st from prev row, dc3tog, 1 dc into lst st
Row 7             (RS) ch1, 1 sc into next st, ch2, 1 sc into 3rd st of the fan, 5 dc into sc fom prev row, 1                         sc into 3rd st of the fan, ch2, 1 sc into each of last 2 sts, turn
Row 8             (WS) no initial ch, 1 sc into next 4 sts, 5 dc into 3rd st of the fan from prev row, 1 sc                             into last 4 sts, fasten off, weave in this end

Place 3 markers onto the sole. First marker should go into the middle of the sole's front, then count 14 sts to the right and place 2nd marker there, then count 14 sts to the left and place 3rd marker there. Place marker in the middle of the half circle of the crocheted top - you will align it with the middle of the sole front. Each corner of the espadrille top will be aligned with each marker on the side.

Use the long tail to either slip stitch or sew the top of the espadrille to the sole. Weave in the end.

HEEL:

color #2 (red)

Foundation: ch19

Row 1           1 sc into second ch from hook, 1 sc into each sts to end, turn
Row 2-5        ch1, 1 sc into each sts to end, turn
Row 6           ch1, 1 sc into next 6 sts, sc2tog - 2x, 1 sc into each st to end (total 7 sc), turn
Row 7           ch1, 1 sc into next 5 sts, sc2tog - 2x, 1 sc into each st to end (total 6 sc), then make a                            long string of chains - about 9-12 inches long. Make another string (same length) in                              the opposite corner - these strings you will tie to the front part in the middle

Place 3 markers onto the sole. First marker should go into the middle of the sole's back, then count 9 sts to the right and place 2nd marker there, then count 9 sts to the left and place 3rd marker there. Place marker in the middle of the heel - it should align with the middle of the sole back. Each corner of the espadrille top will be aligned with each marker on the side (watch my video mentioned above, part 2 of 2).

Use the long tail to either slip stitch or sew the top of the espadrille to the sole. Weave in the end.

Note: Most of the time I work as fast as I can to keep up with knitting and crocheting requests. I have to videotape, edit videos, then convert them & upload them to my channel. After that often I post on my blog patterns. I answer many questions, which means that often I work up to 16 hours a day. I would tremendously appreciate IF anyone of you who finds an error in the written pattern, so please, let me know - where (what rows) and what may be the problem. Many future knitters & crocheters from our artsy and crafty virtual world will thank you for your good deed, including myself.
