COTTON CANDY ELF BABY HAT

In 2015  I visited one small town in New York State. Since I am an artist and an avid knitter and a crocheter I obviously had to stop at a local yarn store. OMG. This lady owner supplies her knitting community with the most gorgeous selection of yarns from many artisan spinners. Most of her yarns are VERY expensive, but these yarns are a pure art form. I wanted to take a thousand dollars and spent it there. Unfortunately, I could not do it. I have a budget and that is just it. So I settled for ONE skein of the most beautiful "pinkiest" and softest yarn I saw in the store. In my mind, I saw a beautiful princess in a beautiful hat! And so did my husband. If I would be younger I would try to have another baby just because of this softest skein of yarn. But... I just bought the yarn. Actually, my husband made me buy it.
And I decided to write a pattern for this hat as I knit. Just a simple, plushy, soft, gorgeous, pointy elf hat. For a little princess.

This yarn is thick and thin. Very textured. And gorgeously pink. I am sure the computer image will not do justice to the color of my fluffy yarn.

I decided to use 9mm knitting needles and knit a simple pointy hat on DPNs. As I am knitting (and writing this post) I already LOVE how the hat is turning out (and I am wishing I would have a 6-12 month-old baby). So, here is the pattern:

September 2022 update: Yippie,  I have someone to gift this hat to. I decided to make a short "show and tell" video to share with you - you can CLICK HERE (coming soon).

PINK HEAVEN - GIRLS TOP DOWN SUMMER DRESS

Hello, my virtual knitting friends. Not too long ago, I received yarn from "ICE YARNS" (a yarn company in  Turkey) in support of my dress design for a two-year-old girl. The yarn is called "Baby Merino." It is a combination of merino, acrylic, and polyamide yarns. The materials in this yarn make it easy to take care of the finished product. Wash it on a gentle cycle in cool water with like items and lay it flat to dry.

As the name of the yarn suggests, the company developed it for baby knits. I just adore the combination of pink-gray-white colors, and so these were the colors I picked to use for knitting this girl's dress.

I carried the dress idea in my head for a while - finally, today I finished it, which I can publish another free written pattern for you.

While knitting this dress, you need to know how to do these stitches: Knit, purl, m1R, m1L, m1P, bobble, YO, and knit below 4 stitches. No worries if you do not know how to do some of the stitches - I show my viewers how to knit these stitches in my video (for right-handed knitters and left-handed knitters also.)

If you would like to knit this dress, you will have to buy the yarn online. One way is to contact the ICE  YARNS company (however, they sell their yarns in bulk), or visit THIS WEBSITE,  or find your yarn via eBay, or Etsy.

Also, according to measurements, it is for a 2-year-old toddler. If you want to make it for a 3-year-old you may increase strap stitches from 30 sts to 36 sts (make it wider around the body), so instead of 36-30-36-30 stitches, you would have 36-36-36-36 sts. For a 4-year-old girl, I would increase the front, back, and strap stitches to 42-36-42-36, where 42 sts would represent the straps and 36 sts would represent the back/front parts. However, you need to use your judgment. Of course with more stitches in your body area, the number count would change accordingly.

If you'd love to knit along with me - click on either link below (depending on if you are rightie or leftie).

If you used a hook, place the stitch on your working needle and continue knitting (see the video)

AZURE - American Girl Doll Dress

When knitting was not as popular as today, I did a few "American Girl Doll Fashion Shows" for local libraries. I knitted many outfits for my four AGDs and one Madam Alexander (one day I will show you those outfits in the video), then I dressed them up, took other pieces of their wardrobe to a library, and displayed them where children and adults could see the "knitted fashions."

Today, I would love to share with you another dress that I designed, and this time I also videotaped the making of the dress. If you knit this dress I hope you will make a little girl very happy.

Gauge:
4" x 4" = 22 sts x 30 rows

Measurements:

Step-by-Step Directions:

This dress is knitted top-down. First, it is knitted back and forth, then in the round.
CO 58 sts

Row 1-5        *[K1, P1]* - 29x, turn
Row 6            *[K1, P1]* - 2x, K50, *[
K1, P1]* - 2x, turn
Row 7            *[K1, P1]* - 2x, P50, *[K1, P1]* - 2x, turn

Row 8            *[K1, P1]* - 2x, M, K8, m1, K1, M, K1, m1, K3, m1, K1, M, K1, m1, K20, m1, K1, M, K1, m1, K3, m1, K1, M, K1, m1, K8, M *[K1, P1]* - 2x, turn
Row 9            *[K1, P1]* - 2x, P58, *[K1, P1]* - 2x, turn

Repeat Rows 8 & 9 eleven more times (total 12x, including Rows 8 & 9) while adding 8 new stitches in every EVEN row (Rows 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30), thus purling 8 more stitches in every ODD row. You should add 96 sts in total.

CONNECT BACKS TO FRONT:

Before you start connecting fronts and back together put sleeve stitches on holders (I use 2 thick strings).

First, work on overlapping and connecting both back parts together as such:
Overlap both edges (the buttonhole side on the top!) in such a way that you will K2tog 1st buttonhole side stitch with 4th stitch of the other edge (this will be beginning of your new round), 2nd buttonhole side stitch with 3rd stitch of the other edge, 3rd buttonhole side stitch with 2nd stitch of the other edge, 4th buttonhole side stitch with 1st stitch of the other edge (see the video if you need help). You can remove all the markers as you knit. Also, remember you knitted 2 sts together 4x, thus you will have 46 sts for the back. (If needed you can watch the video - Part 1).

Now you are ready to connect fronts and back (knit in the round):

Rnd 1            K21, CO 1 st,  K46, CO 1 st, K21 (total 94 sts = 4+21+1+46+1+21)
Rnd 2-3         K94
Rnd 4            P94
Rnd 5            Make 8 holes for the ribbon: K6, K2tog, YO, *[K10, K2tog, YO]* - 3x; K8, K2tog, YO; *[K10, K2tog, YO]* - 3x; K4
Rnd 6            K94
Rnd 7            P94
Rnd 8-?         K94

Repeat Rnd 8 as many times as needed until you reach 4", depending on if you want to knit a lacy pattern at the bottom of the dress. If you don't want to knit a lacy pattern then knit another inch and then finish with 5-6 rows of either the ribbing or the garter stitch to prevent curling of the edge.
You could also make the dress longer by knitting more rounds before the pattern OR keep repeating the lacy pattern few more times.

NOTE:
Before you will start with the lacy pattern, you need to add 5 extra sts in your last round - distribute these stitchers evenly among 94 sts (make one stitch about every 18-19 sts). You need to have 99 sts total. You will work with 11 stitch repeats - that means for the lacy pattern you will do 9 REPEATS.

LACY PATTERN:

Rnd 1            K2tog-2x; *[YO, K1]* - 3x; YO; SSK - 2x (Repeat 9x)
Rnd 2-3         K11 (Repeat 9x)
  • Repeat Rnd 1-3 three more times (Rnd 4-12);
  • Then repeat Rnd 1 and 2 (Rnd 13 & 14), before you will finish the dress with the garter stitch edging (Rnd 15-19)
Rnd 15          P11 (Repeat 9x)
Rnd 16          K11
(Repeat 9x)
Rnd 17          P11 (Repeat 9x)
Rnd 18          K11 (Repeat 9x)

In Rnd 19 BO by using purl stitches.

SLEEVES

Note: There are 29 sts for each sleeve. Since we CO one stitch between front and back (each side) we need to CO in the underarm area in such a way that we will not have any holes. If you observe you can fit in five (5) extra stitches. That will bring the total stitches for the sleeve to 34 sts. (If needed you can watch the video - Part 1).

Knit the sleeves in the round.

Rnd 1            Starting in the middle of the underarm area CO 3 sts, K29, then finish CO 2 more sts
Rnd 2-7         *[K1, P1]* - 17x
Rnd 8            BO all the stitches, weave in the ends.

Note: If you wish to knit long sleeves then instead of ribbing keep knitting in the round and decreasing 1 sts at the beginning of the row, and 1 stitch at the end every few rows (approx. every 6 rows) - about four times, then finish the sleeve with 5-6 rows of ribbing.

Weave in all remaining ends/tails. Block. Dress up the American Girl Doll or give it as a gift.

Snow White Knitted Bunny Hat

I do get requests for occasional projects. And not too long ago a knitter asked me to make a bunny hat for a 5/6-year-old. Since I have a big stash of yarn, I found a white yarn (no label but I think it is Lion Brand's Pound of Love, since it looks the same as my blue colored yarn that is Pound of Love that has a label). Then I needed a pink yarn for the inner part of the rabbit's ear. I had a leftover from Mandala Cake (also Lion Brand). However, that yarn was a little thinner which was perfect for my purpose. The hat was knitted from just one strand. When I was working on the ears' white part I used 2 strands, but for the pink part, I used one strand only.
Now if you would like to make the hat smaller you could (cast on 80 sts to make it 16" in diameter) and of course, knit a lower number of rows to make the hat shorter.
Add eyes, a nose, and whiskers if you wish.

Of course, for people that do better knitting along with the videos, I recorded my knitting. If you like to read patterns for the hat and for the ears - scroll down.

Knitted Baby Bib

Every January many knitters knit a gift for someone for Valentine's day. As my project this year I decided to knit a baby bib. With hearts. I found it very appropriate.
I went to my stash and found a leftover yarn from one of my projects (a scarf for my husband) I did a couple of years ago. The yarn I used was a red/black Scarfie. However, I used predominantly the red part only. I will be thinking about what I could do with the black/red part. Perhaps a hat to go with the bib? Or I could knit bloomers?

If you would like to see my playlist with a couple of Valentine's Day projects, including this "Bib", click on one of the links below:

Socks From Leftover Yarn For 3-6 Month Old Babies

You probably will see more baby patterns on my blog for a while. That's because our friend had a baby and I love to knit for babies.

Here are another tiny socks knitted from a leftover yarn (which I used to knit my daughter's boyfriend's socks). Unfortunately, I can't remember the brand of the yarn. Although I  tried to search for this particular color I just didn't find any image online. The closest was the "Wisdom Yarns" sock yarn.

I believe that you could use basically any sock yarn to knit these socks for about 3 months old baby.

My next project will be socks for 6-9 months old rascal.

Material:
  • Yarn: leftover sock yarn (any sock yarn)
  • Knitting needles 2.75 mm - either DPNs or Circular - whichever ones you prefer
  • Scissors
  • Yarn Needle

Size:
  • Length of the sole (heel to toe): ~3.5” (you can make it longer if you chose so)
  • Ankle Area: ~ circumference of K1/P1 ribbing is 4"(unstretched) to ~6" (stretched)
  • Ribbing (Cuff) Height: 2.75”
  • Heel Flap: 0.75"
  • Sole width: 2” flat; (circumference is ~ 4+”)

Gouge:

On knitting needles 2.75mm - 1” x 1” = 7 sts x 10 rows (in stockinette stitch)

Abbreviation:

DPN(s) - double-pointed needle(s)
CO - cast on
K - knit
P - purl
sl 1st st - slip first stitch purl-wise
SSK - slip knit-wise, slip knit-wise, and then knit them together through the back loop
P2tog - purl two stitches together
K2tog - knit two stitches together
RS - right side
WS - wrong side
st(s) - stitch(es)

Step-by-Step Directions:

Make 2.

Foundation: cast on 36 stitches

  • The Cuff
Rnd 1          *[K1, P1]* - to end of the row, then distribute the stitches evenly, among 3 or 4 DPNs (or use either 2 pairs of short circular needles or circular needles with a long cable), without twisting your knitted row, join stitches into a circle

Rnd 2-26      *[K1, P1]* - to end of each row. Make your cuff as long as you want. I knitted my cuff 2.75" long.

  • The Heel Flap
If knitting on DPN's divide your stitches as such: needle #1 (the heel flap needle) - 18 sts, and needles #2 and #3 - 9 sts. If you are using circular needles you most likely have stitches divided to 18 + 18 between your magic loops.

Row 27-34      Work on your first 18 sts only back and forth (NOT in the round) - *[K1, P1]* - 9x

  • Turning The Heel (row by row)
Keep working your sock back and forth (NOT in the round), starting with Row 1.

Row 1     (RS) sl. 1st st, K9, SSK, K1, (5 sts left on the needle), turn
Row 2     (WS) sl. 1st st, P3, P2tog, P1, (5 sts left on the needle), turn
Row 3     (RS) sl. 1st st, K4, SSK, K1, (3 sts left on the needle), turn
Row 4     (WS) sl. 1st st, P5, P2tog, P1, (3 sts left on the needle), turn
Row 5     (RS) sl. 1st st, K6, SSK, K1 (1 sts left on the needle), turn
Row 6     (WS) sl. 1st st, P7, P2tog, P1 (1 sts left on the needle), turn
Row 7     (RS) sl. 1st st, K8, SSK, (0 sts left on the needle), turn
Row 8     (WS) sl. 1st st, P8, P2tog, (0 sts left on the needle), turn

  • The Gusset (knit in the round)
Note: you will work from now on RS only in the round.

You should finish with 10 sts on your working needle, and you are ready to pick up stitches along the sides of your flap. You will proceed as such (starting with Rnd 1 again):

Rnd 1             K10, PU 6, K18, PU 6
Rnd 2             K14, K2tog, K18, SSK, K4
Rnd 3             K38
Rnd 4             K13, K2tog, K18, SSK, K3
Rnd 5             K36
Rnd 6             K12, K2tog, K18, SSK, K2
Rnd 7             K34
Rnd 8             K11, K2tog, K18,  Note: This is the end of your row. We will start a new row after this point.

  • The Foot Part
Rnd 9             Note: Move your last 3 stitches to your next (= first) needle, this will be your new beginning, then SSK, K1, K30 (total 32 sts)
Rnd 10-21     K32

Note: To make your socks a little longer add 1+ more rows.

  • The Toe Part
Let's start with Rnd 1 again.

Rnd 1           *[K1, K2tog, K10, SSK, K1]* - 2x
Rnd 2          K28
Rnd 3           *[K1, K2tog, K8, SSK, K1]* - 2x
Rnd 4          K24
Rnd 5           *[K1, K2tog, K6, SSK, K1]* - 2x (20 sts)
Rnd 6           *[K1, K2tog, K4, SSK, K1]* - 2x (16 sts)

  • To Finish Each Sock:
Bind off using Kitchener Stitch. In order to close your toe gap with Kitchener stitch, you need your first 8 stitches lined up with your next 8 stitches. Cut off about 1/2 a foot-long tail, thread it into your yarn needle, and using the Kitchener Stitch close the toe gap. Weave in all the ends/tails.

Unisex Baby Hat On Straight Needles

A few weeks ago I had a request to make a video of a hat knitted on straight knitting needles. This hat is simple enough for any beginner that mastered cast on, bind off, knit and purl stitches, and can follow a tutorial on how to do decreases (in my video). Below you will find links to the videos (for right-handed and left-handed knitters) and also my written pattern.
The written pattern is for 6 months old baby (M size), but if you would like to knit the hat for a small (S size) baby, then cast on 8 stitches less (70 sts) and knit a lower number of rows to accommodate for the height of the smaller head (6 - 10 fewer rows). If you would like to knit the hat for a bigger baby (L size) then you can add 8 stitches (86 sts), and if needed knit more rows in the middle part. You would also adjust the number of stitches between decreases.
I decided to calculate stitches for Small and Large sizes for you - just in case, you would like to make a smaller or bigger hat.
Please let me know of any mathematical errors in my pattern.
Enjoy.

Videos:
FOR LEFT HANDED KNITTERS - COMING SOON

Size:

Small and Large sizes are calculated mathematically, therefore the measurements are approximate. The Medium size is more accurate (my measured hat)
  • head circumference - approx. S-12.5", M-14", L-15.5" (unstretched), up to 14"-18"-20" (stretched)
  • hat height - approx. 6"-7"-7.5"
  • ribbing height  - 1"

Gauge:
10 sts & 20 rows = 2” (garter stitch)

Material:

Abbreviations:

S - small size (0-3 months)
M - medium size (6 months)
L - large size (9-12 months)
CO - cast on
K - knit
P - purl
sl last st wyf - slip first stitch purl-wise with yarn in front
CDD - Center Double Decrease - first insert your working needle knit-wise through the first two stitches on your main needle, then slip them off together (DO NOT knit them together, just slip them), knit the next stitch, and then pass both slipped stitches together over the stitch you just knitted
st(s) - stitch(es)

Step-by-Step Directions:

Foundation - cast on 70-78-86 stitches

RIBBING:

Row 1-6            *[K1, P1]* - to end of the row, turn

MIDDLE PART:

Let's start row count from 1

Rnd 1-43                K1tbl, K68-76-84, sl last st wyf

Knit until your middle part measures approximately 3.75"- 4.25"- 4.75". My middle part measured 4.25"

VERSION #1

DECREASING FOR THE TOP OF THE HAT:

This seam is one stitch off-center

This decrease part is written according to my video (see above), which I was making without any pattern. It was more or less free knitting - I was designing the hat as I was videotaping. However, the seam is one stitch off-center.
If you want perfectly centered seam, see VERSION #2 with the CENTERED DECREASE  below.

Let's start row count from 1

Rnd 1                K1tbl, K8-9-10, CDD, *[K14-16-18, CDD]* - repeat 3x, K6-7-8, sl last st wyf

Rnd 14              K1tbl, K0-1-2, P1, *[K2-4-6, P1]* - repeat 3x, K2-3-4, sl last st wyf

FINISHING THE SMALL HAT:
With the use of hook pull yarn through all the remaining stitches, make a knot. Then sew your sides together (line up your stitches well) and weave in all your loose ends (tails).

Rnd 13              K1tbl, K2-3, CDD, *[K2-4, CDD]* - repeat 3x, K0-1, sl last st wyf

Note: Most of the time I work as fast as I can to keep up with knitting and crocheting requests. I have to videotape, edit videos, then convert them & upload them to my channel. After that often I post on my blog patterns. I answer many questions, which means that often I work up to 16 hours a day. I would tremendously appreciate IF anyone of you who finds an error in the written pattern, so please, let me know - where (what rows) and what may be the problem. Many future knitters & crocheters from our artsy and crafty virtual world will thank you for your good deed, including myself.
