Knitted "Breezy Day Shorts" Pattern

Who doesn't love to knit for babies? It is so much fun. And when my friends tell me someone in their family is expecting, I start thinking about a new design. I love to make them something special. Something no one has yet.
My friend will have a baby closer to the fall - when the weather is changing all the time. When hot days replace cool days or nights. When babies may need something warmer, but still semi-summery. With all that on my mind, I designed these tiny shorts (and then knitted socks to go with them).

As I was working on my design, I recorded my progress not only on the paper but I videotaped the knitting tutorial as well. And here I am sharing my project with you.

You will need 1 skein of DK yarn. If you would like to knit socks also then you will need a few more yards of the second skein.

The shorts may be slightly big for a newborn, but perfectly fine on a 3 months old baby. However, some babies are born bigger than others, so keep that in mind.

"BREEZY DAY SHORTS" PATTERN ( on RAVELRY)   

 

Materials:

• Yarn: 1 skein of KnitPicks, Bare, DK weight; 100% Merino wool; Color: linen; 100 g; 246 yds; Note: if you want to add color to your project you could use either 2 balls of SWISH DK (100% Fine Superwash Merino), or 2 balls CAPRA DK YARN (85%merino and 15% cashmere - these links are affiliated links.
• Knitting needles #5 (3.75 mm) - either DPNs (I used two sizes: 10” & 5”) or Circular - whichever ones you prefer
• Scissors
• Yarn Needle

Size:

0-3 months;
Waist - up to 18”
Hip circumference - 20+”
Leg circumference - up to 11”
Rise - 14” (waist to crotch - 6.75”)


Gouge (stockinette stitch):

On knitting needles #5 (3.75mm) - 1” x 1” = 6 sts x 8 rows

Wrist Warmers e-Book

When I go shopping for a sweater, or for a blouse with long sleeves, the sleeves are usually shorter than I would like them. I guess my arms are slightly longer than other people's arms. Then there is shrinkage. Sometimes my tops' sleeves get shorter after washing. So, I usually end up with sleeves right above my wrist bone. I think the bone's name is Ulna. So, my Ulna area gets cold and uncomfortable. That is why I like to make different types of wrist warmers for myself. Even just a very simple one - cuffs straight up, with slightly flared up hand area that covers Carpals and part of the Metacarpals (click for images HERE, if you want to know what I am talking about). And did you know that if you use a computer and keep your Carpals warm, you may have fewer problems with your Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)? Click HERE to read about the prevention of your CTS. Yeah. I like that.

Red Hot Sox

I adore Japanese lacey patterns. I have a collection of many exquisite "stitch patterns" by very talented designers. Some are fairly easy to knit, some are very complex.
The lacey socks in the image on this page are knitted with Plymouth "Happy Feet" sock yarn. But, you can use any sock yarn of your choice. The socks are knitted for a US shoe size 6.5 to 7.5 - however, one extra repeat of the lacey pattern, which is a 25 stitch/8 row repeat, could accommodate 1 size bigger foot. The toe part is knitted more slanted on one side than on the other.

If you are a person that knows how to knit in the round, can concentrate on yarn overs and decreases (k2tog and ssk) then you should not have any problem knitting these socks.

Baby Blue Blanket And Scarf - Lacy Patterns

Many of you know that my passion lays in art, knitting, and crocheting. My brain is thinking about creating something all the time. Even in my dreams.
When I saw many different types of variegated yarns from various makers, I thought it would be wonderful to knit a beautiful baby blanket in a lace pattern with lovely color changes. I wanted a design that would make this baby blanket look luxurious yet that it would be relatively easy to knit for a wider group of knitters.
I found a chart for a beautiful lacy pattern and made a couple of changes to it; then I graphed it again. While I filmed a detailed video, I wrote a pattern simultaneously (in between the takes) for a blanket and a scarf.
You can use practically any yarn weight for this project. For my scarf and baby blanket, I used yarn of medium weight (#4) and US needles #8 (5 mm). If you decide to knit a blanket, scarf or any other item from a thinner yarn, you will have to do more stitch and row repeats.

Crocheted Baby Slippers 0-2 years - Pattern & Video

I made a video of 3.5" long baby slippers/booties for crocheters that are fairly new to crocheting (here see a VIDEO 4 RIGHTIES, and a VIDEO 4 LEFTIES), BUT who have already some experience.
They know how to handle the hook and yarn, how to do a slip stitch, a chain, a crochet single crochet, a half double crochet, a double crochet stitches, how to increase, how to decrease. Then after I was finished with my video I worked on my written pattern for a couple of sizes: 0-6 months, 6-12 months, 12-18 months and 18-24 months.

Knitted Christmas Stocking Pattern

Although holidays are approaching very fast you may still be able to knit this Christmas Stocking with a snowflake design for someone special.

Before I started to knit, first I purchased a nice looking wool (Cascade Yarn). Then I sketched a couple of snowflakes on the graph paper.
Since I wanted my stocking to be "thick" (so it could hang nicely by the fire place), I decided to double my yarn and still use a suggested size of knitting needles. Advantage to doubling my yarn (you can also use bulky yarn instead of doubling it) was that I didn't have to knit as many stitches as I would have to, if I would use only single yarn. I added pom-poms in my design to make the stocking different. However, you could make it without pom-poms and just add a little loop (you can knit one, or use a ribbon) so you could hang it.

American Girl Doll Pink-White Hat Pattern

I love knitting for an American Girl Doll, even though my daughter is grown. But one day she will have a children of her own, and she can pass her doll to her child along with many handmade clothes.

Here is another item I made during hurricane Sandy. It is a hat made from doubled yarn. Although it took me couple of days to put a .pdf together and put it on line, I knitted this hat in a couple hours. The hat comes with a simple scarf as a bonus.

This hat is knitted on double pointed needles. The two yarns of different colors make this hat interesting looking, so there was no need for more elaborate pattern. Advanced beginner should be able to handle this task, IMHO.

You can use even leftovers and make the hat very colorful. So if you have any one in your family that has an American Girl Doll, you could make a beautiful inexpensive gift for them.

Green Hat With Pom-poms For A Baby

Before Sandy hit East Coast I thought "if we loose a power, I will have time to knit". I could not believe how wrong I was. I realized it when four huge trees fell down into our driveway. I put my knitting skills aside and turned  into a lumberjack. Well, almost. I helped my husband to clear the driveway, so we could get our car out of our garage. I didn't have to use a chainsaw though, my dear husband did.

After a couple of days we were both tired from a heavy labor, and that is when I said "enough", and sat down to knit a couple of items. Here is one: a baby hat that I "knitted" first in my head, while I dragged the cut up wood to the side of the road :-)

The hat is not that difficult - if you know how to knit on double pointed needles, if you can do purl and knit stitches, and if you can make pom-poms, you can certainly knit this hat.

The hat is 14 inches in diameter, but can stretch 2-3 inches wider, so it would be good for a newborn up to about 4-6 months old baby. It is made from Lion Brand Yarn "Jiffy". this yarn is soft and slightly fuzzy. It is acrylic, so any baby that is allergic to wool should be fine. If you would like to make a hat from wool, then choose a wool of a similar thickness. Of course you can chose color of your choice. The hat has a nice textured look.

Off White Knitted Hat And Booties For A Newborn Baby

I love a linen color. It is a "nice, soft, off white and very pleasing for the eyes" color.

The booties and the hat (left) are made from "70% acrylic/30% wool" yarn.

This yarn is a good product for children - soft yet warm for colder days/nights. The rim is knitted in roll up fashion, but could be knitted in a classical way too. Pompoms add a whimsical flair to the hat and they will make any baby look highly adorable.

My daughter's doll got another outfit for her wardrobe. Crocheted Hat With Raised Design - Cepice S Reliefnim Designem

I love to make hats. I remember hats similar to this one back in 70's, but as you all know the fashion always returns with slight updated changes. These hats are quite popular in the Czech Republic and other European countries nowadays, and there are many different versions. To the left you can see my "white/cream" version and below a smaller version in pink.

I used worsted acrylic yarn to crochet both of my hats. I was supposed to use 5 mm hook (size H), but instead I used 3.50 mm (size E), which resulted in a very firm and dense feel of the hat. It is great for a windy and cold weather. However, if you prefer something softer, you can adjust the size of the hook accordingly (use bigger size). Of course, then the number of rows and number of increasing stitches would have to be adjusted as well.

Over the years of knitting I acquired many yarn leftovers. And I know that many knitters are on the same boat with me. What to do with these leftovers? One idea is to knit a scarf. A very wild and very different scarf. I already made about three of them and there is always someone who loves it so much that I give it away. This scarf can make quite inexpensive fun gift for fashion conscious individuals. Not only this scarf is easy to knit (although time consuming due to braiding etc.), but also there is nothing you could do wrong while making the scarf. It is the long ends that make the style.

Knitted Snowflake Hat For A Doll >>> Cepicka Na Panenku

I have knitted this cute wintry hat for a doll for any child's American Girl Doll (or similar sized doll). The hat is not hard to knit and can be done in couple of hours. However, you do have to know how to knit Fair Isle type of patterns. Once you try it and do not keep your yarn too tight, but rather loose, you could be quite successful even if it is your first time knitting Fair Isle.

Knitted Short Sleeve Sweater And Shorts For American Girl Doll

The other day I was thinking about my childhood. The memories brought me to thinking about dolls. I had a tiny doll, which was about 5 inches tall. I used to love to make clothes for her. As soon as I knew how to knit, I would make her skirts, scarfs, pants. To knit tops was difficult for me, so I would sew them instead. Later on my love for creating doll clothes was carried over to making my own clothes too. Since then many years passed, and I wonder now where is my doll....

Simple Knitted Booties/Slippers For Baby >>> Jednoduche Pletene Backurky Pro Batole

I am becoming quite an expert in knitting baby booties (or if you prefer word "slippers") for children. I actually sold some during Christmas time, gave away a couple as a gift and people do marvel at the shape and design I make. I already had few requests for my pattern. Although I usually knit these booties with a design (the image on the left) which calls for two or more different yarn colors, the pattern described in this post is BASIC, kept simple, and is written for the use of only ONE color (see the image below) so even the advanced beginner can make these booties/slippers.

Note: If you want these slippers bigger (wider/longer) just add a couple of stitches and/or rows. Then you would have more stitches for the top part (rows 40-43) and/or you would repeat steps in rows 44 and 45 few more times (if you add two rows - one more time; if you add 4 rows - 2 more times....etc).

• For these booties I used RED HEART Supersaver yarn (worsted medium #4) - blue color
• 5 double pointed knitting needles size #3 - I use smaller knitting needles than required to create firmer/denser feel to the booties/slippers
• Crochet hook to to help you to cast on around the sides of the booties (optional) and/or to weave in ends (if you leave your ends long you can also use needle)

• Scissors to cut of any remaining ends

Size:

Booties are 3 and 1/2 inches long and 2 inches wide


Abreviations:

• CO - cast on
• K - knit
• P - purl
• PSSO - pass slipped stitch over (= do not knit/purl your last stitch, just slip it from your left needle onto your right needle)
• inc KBF - increase by knitting 2 stitches from one stitch by knitting first in back then in front of the same stitch
• dec - decrease
• K2tog - knit 2 stitches together
• P2tog - purl 2 stitches together
• BO - bind off

Step-by-step instructions:

Row 1           CO 8 stitches
Row 2           K 7, PSSO
Row 3           K1, inc KBF, K4, inc KBF, PSSO (you have total 10 stitches on your knitting needle)
Row 4 - 31    K9, PSSO
32                  K1, dec by K2tog, K4, dec by K2tog, PSSO
Row 33         K1, dec by K2tog, K2, dec by K2tog, PSSO
Row 34         K6 (this is your front of the bootie/slipper)

Row 35         CO on three knitting needles as such:
- starting on a side, insert a different knitting needle  into each stitch on the first side and pull through (you may use crochet hook and transfer these stitches onto your needle to make your knitting easier) , you should have total 16 stitches;
- continue in the same manner on the heel area using a third knitting needle - total 7 stitches (one less then you cast-ed on);
- and at last with your fourth knitting needle (or use hook) continue casting again on the other side of the bootie, total 16 stitches,
- use your fifth knitting needle to K6 (front/tip of the bootie)
Row 36 - 39    K45 in each row (total 4 rows)



top of your bootie - you will be knitting back and forth 

Row 40          K39, P6, and then P1 from the other (side) knitting needle, turn
Row 41          PSSO, K6, K1 from the other (side) knitting needle (total 8 stitches on front), turn
Row 42          PSSO, P8, P1 from the other (side) knitting  needle, turn
Row 43          PSSO, K6, K1 from the other (side) knitting  needle (total 10 stitches on front), turn

from now on you will maintain 10 stitches on the FRONT knitting needle while knitting top of your bootie this way:

Row 44          PSSO, K8, while having one stitch on your left needle psso from the side knitting needle to your left needle and K2tog-left slant (insert needle from right side to create the left slant) these two stitches, turn
Row 45          PSSO, P8, while having one stitch on your left needle psso from the side knitting needle to the left needle and P2tog these two stitches, turn
Row 46 - 53   repeat/alternate rows  44. and 45. - or until you have 6 stitches left on each "side" needle, 7 on the "heel" needle and 10 on "front" needle (note: if you want smaller opening you can repeat 44. and 45. one or two more times)

the ankle area - you will be knitting in the round

Row 54          K35, then pick up a yarn with right knitting needle (between knitting needles where side connects with front), place that yarn on left needle (front needle) and K2tog, K9 and then continue with 14 more rows
Row 55 - 68  K all
Row 69         BO and weave in your loose ends

Crochet Earrings For Beginners 2 >>> Hackovane Nausnice Pro Zacatecniky 2

I am not sure if any of you remember or perhaps saw in old photographs or movies belts made of metal circles that were crochet-ed around? I made one like that when I lived back in my old country. Today, per my daughter's request and her own idea, I created second set of earrings that resemble 60's fashion. They are quite easy to make. See below.

Material:

• DMC cotton thread (made in France) - 3 different colors of your choice (or just one color if you wish - your choice)
• Hook #10
• 6 Twelve mm Split Rings
• 2 Earrings Hooks
• Needle
• Scissors

Abreviations:

SC - single crochet
TO - thread over (instead of YO = yarn over) since we work with a thread
ch - chain
sl. st. - slip stitch

Step-by-step instructions:

Insert each earring hook into the each split ring. You will work on each earring one at a time. You have 4 more split rings - 2 extra rings for each earring.

1. Insert your crochet hook into the split ring (with the earring hook end pointing away from your body - to establish front of the earring), thread over (TO), pull through, TO, pull through the loop, ch1, [insert crochet hook through the opening in the split ring, TO, pull through, TO, pull through both loops - this is single crochet] - repeat many times until all your single crochet stitches are condensed and the metal of the ring doesn't show through. Finish with a sl. st. to connect the circle and weave the end into the crochet row so it doesn't come undone. Please, refer to this image  or this page on my blog, while crochet-ing single stitches in the first row.

 2. Do the same (= one row of single crochet stitches) on two other rings (use on each ring a different color if you wish) BUT this time leave the end about 5-7 inches long do not weave the end immediately to "clean it up". Instead use the end of a second circle to sew it onto the first circle then make a knot and weave it into the SC row of same color so the end is hidden (cleaned up) and does not untie. And at last sew the end of a third circle onto the second circle, and again make a knot and weave it into the SC row of same color so the end is hidden (cleaned up) and does not untie.

3. Repeat steps 1. and 2. for the second earring.
