Crocheted Sixtopus

Rainbow Sixtopus  

Over the years while living in my area, I met few ladies from my birth country, which of course I keep in touch via Facebook. Occasionally, I share my knitted or crocheted items with my friends, but not too much because they do not knit or crochet. For that, I have a separate page on Facebook for people who are interested in these artful projects. One of my friends tagged me in a post recently where one Czech hospital is looking for crocheted Octopuses for prematurely born babies or newborns in intensive care. I did a research and found out that it started in Norway when someone gave a newborn a crocheted octopus toy into a bassinet and the baby started doing better. So nurses in this hospital started giving babies handmade octopuses and realized that all children with octopuses were doing better than children without them. The word spread out, and now many hospitals in EU are accepting donations of handmade octopuses, and one of the hospitals is in my country, where I will be traveling to in a couple of weeks. I will be bringing them some Sixtopuses.

Now, when I was doing a research on these octopuses, I've read someone's comment that US hospitals do not accept these handmade toyes because of babies being vulnerable infections. Supposedly crochet items cannot be adequately cleaned to remove the bacteria. And that made me think: "WHY NOT?" There are UV-C light machines that kill bacteria and diseases by attacking their DNA. And I am sure hospitals have such machines. These toys with tentacles help premature babies to stabilize their heart rate and breathing. So it would be beneficial for babies to have octopuses next to them.

HERE IS A LIST OF HOSPITALS THAT ACCEPT OCTOPUSES

Make a sixtopus for someone's newborn and make them happy - their baby does not have to be prematurely born to sleep with your Sixtopus :-) Do not forget to wash your sixtopus before you give it away to a tiny healthy newborn.

Yarn: leftovers of Loops & Thread, Snuggly Wuggly, light weight #3 yarn, your choice of colors  (these yarns were used in making of the video)
For "Rainbow Sixtopus" (pictured above) I used yarn by Premier, Cotton Fair; 52% Cotton/48% Acrylic; use your choice of colors
Hook - US size E,  3.50 mm
Scissors
Sewing/yarn needle for weaving your ends in

Size:
Length of the sixtopus is ~7" (about 17.50 cm)

Abbreviations:
ch - chain
sc - single crochet
pm - place marker
st(s) - stitch(es)
dc - double crochet
sc2tog - single crochet 2 stitches together (if possible do it invisible way - see my video)

Step-by-Step:

HEAD/BODY:

color #1

Foundation: magic circle

Rnd 1              6 sc into magic circle, connect into circle with sl. st
Rnd 2              *(2 sc in each st )* - 6x; work in a spiral manner, pm (total 12 sts)
Rnd 3              *(1 sc in 1st sts, 2 sc into next st)* - 6x; (total 18 sts), pm
Rnd 4              *(2 sc in 1st stitch, 1 sc in each of next two sts)* - 6x; (total 24 sts), pm
Rnd 5-9          1 sc in each of next 24 sts, pm
Row 10           *(1 sc in each of next two sts, sc2tog)* - 6x; (total 18 sts), pm
Row 11-12      1 sc in each of next 18 sts, pm
Row 13           *(sc2tog, 1 sc in each of next st)* - 6x; (total 12 sts), pm
Row 14-16     1 sc in each of next 12 sts, pm

Finish this with 2 slip stitches to slope down the row. Stuff the head with your preferred toy filling.

PLUG:

Crochet a circle (a plug) to close the head/body part.

Rnd 1              6 sc into magic circle, connect into circle with sl. st
Rnd 2              *(2 sc in each st )* - 6x; work in a spiral manner (total 12 sts)

Do not cut off the yarn. Place the circle (plug) over the opening of the stuffed Head/Body and crochet them together with slip stitches (see my video).

TENTACLES:

Tentacle 1            Either continue with same yarn or start a foundation of 30+ chain stitches with a different color; then on the "way back" toward the head work as such: make 3 dc into 4th st from the hook, *(make 3 dc into each st)* - repeat to end, then slip st into the second st of the circle

Tentacle 2-6        ch30+, 3 dc into 4th st from the hook, *(make 3 dc into each st)* - repeat to end, then slip st into the second st of the circle

When finished weave in all the ends.

Amigurumi Bunny

Someone asked me to make an Amigurumi video. Since I am always extremely busy with many other projects (fyi, I am working on about 30+ of them simultaneously!, including my art projects, and classes in our community college for a 2 year degree) that I was postponing this project for a later date, as I am doing with all other 30+ projects that I am working on LOL. However, the other day I saw an easy Amigurumi Egg on the internet with a free pattern. I sat down and videotaped it with Kristi's permission. You can see her free written pattern on her WEBSITE HERE, and my links to VIDEOS FOR RIGHTIES AND LEFTIES HERE.
Well, this got me hooked and I put EVERYTHING on hold and decided to work on my Amigurumi "test toy" design. A Bunny, that is. And then, just for fun, I decided to make a "stop motion" video with my Honey Bunny - so if you like positive videos you can see it HERE. One of these days I should make a crochet along Honey Bunny video. Hopefully. 

So, about almost a week later, after crocheting my Honey Bunny, taking notes of crocheting my Honey Bunny, making the fun video, you can see below the written outcome.
BTW, the beauty of making crocheted toys is that you can use any thickness of yarn with an appropriate hook. A thin yarn will produce a small toy; a thick yarn will create a big toy. I hope to make a video of how to crochet this bunny too. But for now, just a free pattern will have to do. So, if you decide to crochet this Honey Bunny, I hope you will have as much fun with it as I did.

This is how I work - I write and rewrite my designs until they take shape that I am looking for;
and perhaps several days later I may have a sample for design to be published in the form of a free
pattern and most of the time a video too :-)

Materials:

Yarn: use any yarn you want; I used about 1/3 of Patons "Grace"; yarn weight - #3/light; 100% Mercerized Cotton; 125 m/136 yds; 50 g/1.75 oz; color white; plus a string of black for eyes (or use eyes, made specifically for toy making)

Hook size: use a hook one size smaller than a hook recommended by a manufacturer; I used 3.00 mm
Polyester Polyfill 

Scissors
Yarn needle
Stitch marker

Abbreviations:

mr - magic ring (loop)
sc - single crochet stitch
sc "n" - single crochet 1 stitch in each stitch from  previous row, where "n" represents number of consecutive stitches needed to be crocheted (ie. sc 6)
m - marker (I use about 2.5"-4" long string of yarn, which I place right after I finish last sc stitch in each round and before I start a new sc stitch = the string stays between the stitches until I am done with each round)
inc - increase = make two single crochet stitches into the same stitch
dec - invisible decrease = crochet two single crochet stitches together through the front loops
[text in these parentheses] - repeat total number of times
(number in these parentheses) - total number of stitches you should have at the end of the finished row
sl st - slip stitch


Step-by-Step

All parts are crochet in spiral fashion, do not join rows with slip stitches, but rather continue immediately

Body - make one

Rnd 1               mr, sc 6; m
Rnd 2               incr 6x total (= 2 sc sts in each of next 6 consecutive sts); m (total 12 sts)
Rnd 3               *[sc 1, incr]* - repeat from * to * 6x total; m (total 18 sts)
Rnd 4               *[sc 2, incr]* - repeat from * to * 6x total; m (total 24 sts)
Rnd 5               *[sc 3, incr]* - repeat from * to * 6x total; m (total 30 sts)
Rnd 6               sc 30; m
Rnd 7               *[incr, sc 5]* - repeat from * to * 5x total; m (total 35 sts)

Rnd 10              *[sc 15, dec, sc 16, dec]*  - m (total 33 sts)

Make small pieces of Polyfill and start stuffing them inside. As you finish two or three more rows add some more of the stuffing - make sure you do not make the stuffing lumpy, and that it doesn't make bumps on the surface. Spread it nicely along the walls on the inside.

Rnd 14-16         sc 20; m
Rnd 17              *[sc 4, incr]* - repeat from * to * 4x total; m (total 24 sts)
Rnd 18               sc 24; m
Rnd 19               *[sc 4, dec]* - repeat from * to * 4x total; m (total 20 sts)

Leave a long tail and f/o. Finish stuffing your Bunny's body so it feels firm. Thread your yarn needle with the long tail. Pick up the front loops of the 6 stitches from last row and close the opening.


Leg - make 2

Rnd 1               mr, sc 6; m
Rnd 2               sc1, incr - 4x, sc 1; m (total 10 st)
Rnd 3               sc 1, incr, sc 1, incr - 2x, sc 1, incr,  sc 2; m (total 14 st)
Rnd 4               sc 14; m
Rnd 5               sc 2, dec, sc 6, dec, sc 2; m (total 12 st)
Rnd 6               sc 2, dec, sc 4, dec, sc 2; m (total 10 st)

Make small pieces of Polyfill and start stuffing them inside. As you finish two or three more rows add some more of the stuffing - make sure you do not make the stuffing lumpy, and that it doesn't make bumps on the surface. Spread it nicely along the walls on the inside.

Rnd 7-8            sc 10; m; then finish with two extra sl sts to even out the edge

Leave a long tail and f/o. Finish stuffing your Bunny's leg, but don't stuff it all the way to the edge, leave the edge area flat, so the bunny's bottom is flat. Set aside.


Arm - make 2

Rnd 1               mr, sc 6; m
Rnd 2               incr 6x total (= 2 sc sts in each of next 6 consecutive sts); m (total 12 sts)
Rnd 3-5            sc 12; m

Make small pieces of Polyfill and start stuffing them inside. As you finish two or three more rows add some more of the stuffing - make sure you do not make the stuffing lumpy, and that it doesn't make bumps on the surface. Spread it nicely along the walls on the inside.

Rnd 6               *[dec, sc 4]* -  repeat from * to * 2x total; m (total 10 sts)
Rnd 7-8            sc 10; m; then finish with two extra sl sts to even out the edge

Leave a long tail and f/o. Finish stuffing your Bunny's arm, but don't stuff it all the way to the edge, leave the edge area flat, so the bunny's arms lay flat at the body after you attach them. Set aside.

Bunny Ears - make two

Rnd 1               mr, sc 6; m
Rnd 2               incr 6x total (= 2 sc sts in each of next 6 consecutive sts); m (total 12 sts)
Rnd 3               *[sc 1, incr]* - repeat from * to * 6x total; m (total 18 sts)
Rnd 4-7            sc 18; m
Rnd 8               *[sc 7, dec]* - repeat from * to * 2x total; m (total 16 sts)
Rnd 9               *[sc 6, dec]* - repeat from * to * 2x total; m (total 14 sts)

Rnd 3               *[sc 4, dec]* - repeat from * to * 2x total; m (total 10 sts)
Rnd 4               *[sc 3, dec]* - repeat from * to * 2x total; m (total 8 sts); then finish with two extra sl sts to even out the edge. Leave a long tail and f/o.

Make tiny pieces of Polyfill and stuff the tail all the way to the edge - make sure you do not make the stuffing lumpy, and that it doesn't make bumps on the surface. Spread it nicely along the walls on the inside. (Note: I used a back of the pencil)


Joining Pieces Together:

Weave your long tail into a yarn needle and sew onto the body. Legs and tail are attached in triangle - legs in the third row and tail in the 5th row counting from the bottom center of the body (the wider part). Arms are attached above the legs, but in the 10th row from the top. Ears are bent at the edge into a moon shape and sewn on at the top of the head across Row 2 and 3 off the center (slightly toward the back). Eyes are sewn at the 7th row from the top, directly straight up from the front of each arm. Bunny's Snout (mouth) was created by making a cross in the middle between the eyes in the 9th row counting from the top.

After sewing each tail was weaved in invisibly.

Crocheted Easter Egg - Amigurumi Style

I have many friends that celebrate Easter holiday. Every year I am invited to a house full of adults and kids, and all of us celebrate this holiday the Czech way. There is always a lot of food, a lot of games, and an egg decorating contest. All of us participate in this fun activity - and of course, we let the kids win.
Over the years I decorated eggs with crochet designs. But I never made a "stuffed crocheted egg amigurumi." I was going to design my own "Easter Egg," but my schedule is overloaded, and it would take me a long time. I needed to save time for my videotaping, editing, and uploading. I decided to google a pattern for a crocheted egg. I came across Kristi's website where she allowed people to use her "egg" pattern for their projects, including any free class or e-course or as part of a free pattern. She allows anyone to sell finished items made with her pattern as well, provided we all give her credit.
I contacted Kristi and told her about my video of "her egg." She was very gracious. You know, sometimes it takes a long time to finish just one project. I know, I have been in those shoes many times. So, I was delighted I could use "her egg pattern," because she saved me a lot of time. And so, YES, I will gladly give her credit and would like YOU to visit her WEBSITE (see a couple of links to her different stores in FAQ page) or her ETSY STORE - perhaps you will find there a toy pattern you would like to make.

Yellow Chick - Decoration or Toy? >>> Zlute Kuratko - Decorace nebo Hracka?

Do you remember the good old days? Those days, when people used to make their own decorations and toys, which would be cherished and carried on as a family heirloom? Especially heirlooms that were timely to make, were (and still are) passed onto our next generation. However, the industrialization changed much of our artistic and craft making habits. People now spend their hard earn money on machine made stuff, which many times does not last long and is usually thrown out because of poor quality. If we stop making things for ourselves and for our family, we will not be able to pass on any heirlooms anymore.

Here is one that was passed down in Eastern Europe when I used to live there. It could be cherished either as a toy for a child, but mainly it was used as a decoration for the Easter egg. My husband came up even with another use - to "decorate" your soft boiled egg and keep it warm before you sit down to eat it. Of course, you need to put it over an unbroken (shelled) cooked egg. I think that is a great idea.

Knitted Finger Pupper "Mouse" >>> Pleteny Manasek Na Prst "Mysicka Hryzalka"

After being sick and sleeping a lot to get better and after the change of daylight saving time I could not sleep much last night and decided to make another finger puppet, this time a little Mouse. It came out so nice, that even my dear husband admired it. Make it for your children, they will love it!

Finger Puppet "Bunny" >>> Manasek "Kualicek" Na Prst

I made a finger puppets "Doggie" and "Chicken", and they needed a buddy - another finger puppet "Bunny". Actually, there will be plenty of children at the upcoming Easter party and it would be nice if "Chicken" would have a friend "Bunny". Don't you agree?

Step-by-Step Directions:

Make body just like in video Knitting Finger Puppet "Chicken": Part 1/2 - the body at this page.

Ears (also see video):

1. Cast On 5 - knit 6 rows, turn
2. In 7th row K2, then knit one from back and front, K1, slip one, turn
3. Knit 4 rows, turn
4. Then K3, add a stitch, K2, sl st., turn
5. K 4 rows, turn
6. K1, decrease by slipping 2nd stitch on the left needle over the first stitch, K5, sl st, turn
7. K1, decrease by slipping 2nd stitch on the left needle over the first stitch, K4, sl st, turn
8. K2, then working on the right needle - slip first (to the far right) stitch over the second (left stitch on the right needle) one, K2, sl st, turn
9. K2, then working on the right needle - slip first (to the far right) stitch over the second (left stitch on the right needle) one, K1, slip first (to the far right on the right needle) stitch over the second stitch (left stitch on the right needle) again - repeat until you finish all the stitches. Weave the yarn along the edge.

Finger Puppet "Chicken" >>> Manasek "Slepicka" Na Prst

Many of you saw my puppet "Doggie" on my blog already. But Easter is coming up soon, and my girlfriend is throwing a party for several families with children. I decided to make few "Chicken" finger puppets and give them to all of the attending children. So I better get to work.

I decided to make this finger puppet in the simplest way. With the use of my imagination I envisioned just simple straight tube and rounded at the top for head. Then add the comb, the beak and eyes.


Material: 
Yellow yarn (a body)
Red Yarn (a beak and a comb)
Black Yarn (or beads for the eyes)
double pointed needles
hook

Abbreviations:
CO - cast on
st(s) - stitch(es)
DPN - double pointed needles
K - knit
P - purl
K2tog - knit two stitches together
BO bind off
sl st - slip stitch

Step-by-Step Directions:

Row 1          CO 16 sts
Rnd 2          *[K1, P1]* - repeat; then divide stitches between 3 DPNs (such as 5+5+6) and connect into a circle without twisting the knit
Rnd 3-5      *[K1, P1]* - repeat
Rnd 6-32     K16 (if your finger is long knit few more rows )
Rnd 33        *[K2tog]* - repeat (you decreased to 8 sts)
Rnd 34        *[K2tog]* - repeat (you decreased to 4 sts)
Rnd 35        BO with a hook - pull last knitted stitch through all 3 remaining sts, secure with a last sl st

Mnoho z vas jiz zna meho manaska "Hafika". A ponevadz se blizi Velikonoce, kamaradka me pozvala na jijich oslavu. Vim, ze u ni doma bude hodne deti, tak jsem se rozhodla pro kazde dite vyrobit manaska "Slepicku" jako maly darecek. No nemam na to moc casu, Velikonoce jsou za dvermi a bude tam deti jako smeti.

Abych to stihla do Velikonoc, tak jsem si v hlave naplanovala uplest slepicu co nejjednoduzsim zpusobem. Tj. "trubici" a zakoncit to dokulata jako vrh hlavy, pak prihackovat hrebinek, zobacek a ocicka.

1. Pleteme na 4 jehlicich. Nahodit 16 ocek.
2. Zacneme plest hladce-obratce. Pri pleteni rozdelime ocka mezi tri jehlice na 6+4+6 ocek a ctvrtou jehlici pleteme. Spojime do kruhu - pozor at se vam jehlice neprekrouti..
3. Hladce obratce jeste 3-4 rady
4. Pote 16-20 rad hladce (zalezi na delce prstu)

5. Posledni dve rady spleteme vzdy dve ocka dohromady az zustanou 4 ocka, ktere protahneme hackem do jednoho ocka a uhackujeme jeste jedno ocko a protahneme dovnitr budouciho manasku.
