A Simple Lap Blanket Or Scarf/Shawl/Poncho - Free Pattern And Video Tutorial

Crochet this beautiful blanket by using only one-row repeat. I made this lap blanket for a Cancer Center in my town, but you can make it for a child too. The pattern is a very simple, no stress pattern. If you are fairly new to crocheting art, and if you can do a chain, single crochet, and double crochet stitches, then you can make this blanket - an easy fun project. All you have to do a couple of rows for the edge, then one row of the setup row, and after that, you repeat just one row over-and-over until the desired length. Use your leftovers or buy one or two/three big skeins of yarn, and turn this pattern into your own personalized blanket or a scarf. Or a shawl, or a poncho. You can buy several different colors of skeins and make a temperature blanket. (A while back I knitted "SKY SCARF".)

This pattern requires multiples of 5 stitches plus 2 extra edge stitches - one stitch on each side. But you could add 2 extra stitches to your multiples and have 2 stitches on each side. For the blanket, I did 29 repeats (145+edge stitches). For the scarf, I personally would do 9 repeats (45+edge stitches), but if you would like the scarf to be 12" wide and 60" long then you may do 11 repeats and crochet to your desired length. If you would like to do a shawl (28" wide and 80" long) then you may need approximately 24 repeats and again crochet until your desired length.

Keep in mind that the tension is important too - if your tension is different from mine, then you may add or decrease your stitches. Also if you use thinner yarn and smaller hook then you need to add more stitches.

Blanket With Single Crochet Edge

Foundation for the blanket:
If you are working with single crochet stitches for your edge you need to chain 145+2 (total 147 sts).

Row 1 1 sc into second st from hook, then 1 sc into each consecutive st to end, turn

Row 2 1 sc through the front loop into each st to end, turn

Row 3 ch3 (edge st), skip 2 sts, make 2 dc + ch1 + 2 dc into 3rd st, *[skip 4 sts, make 2 dc + ch1 + 2 dc into 5th st]* - repeat until 2 sts are left, skip 1 st, 1 dc into last st (edge st), turn

Row 4 ch3, *[make 2 dc + ch1 + 2 dc into ch sp from prev. row]* - repeat to end, finish with 1 dc in the last st, turn

Repeat Row 4 as many times as needed.

Finish the blanket with 2 last rows as such:

Row 1 1 sc into each consecutive st to end, turn

Row 2 1 sc through the front loop into each st to end

Weave in all the tails (ends).

Blanket With Double Crochet Edge

Foundation for the blanket:

If you are working with double crochet stitches for your edge, then you will need 145+4 stitches (total 149 sts).

Row 1 1 dc into fourth st from hook, then 1 dc into each consecutive st to end, turn

Row 2 ch3, then1 dc through the front loop into each st to end, turn

Row 3 ch3 (edge st), skip 2 sts, make 2 dc + ch1 + 2 dc into 3rd st, *[skip 4 sts, make 2 dc + ch1 + 2 dc into 5th st]* - repeat until 2 sts are left, skip 1 st, 1 dc into last st (edge st), turn
Row 4 ch3, *[make 2 dc + ch1 + 2 dc into ch sp from prev. row]* - repeat to end, finish with 1 dc in the last st, turn

Repeat Row 4 as many times as needed.

Finish the blanket with 2 last rows as such:

Row 1 ch3, then 1 dc into each consecutive st to end, turn

Row 2 ch3, then 1 dc through the front loop into each st to end

Weave in all the tails (ends).

Granny Square No 5 - Flower

Today I am publishing another granny square for my crocheted "Foggy Dawn Sweater Project," this time it is a "Granny Square No 5". Just like Channel perfume No 5, it is feminine and romantic. This square has a 3D feel to it, with the flower centerpiece. It is not difficult once you understand the concept. I have a quite detailed (what else is new?) video that will help you with grasping the construction of this design. I am sure many of you, who are fairly new to crocheting, saw variations of this 3D flower and wondered how it is done. Do not let anything stop you from crocheting this 3D square. You can use it in any project no matter what weight of yarn, yarn type or color you chose. Use it for my sweater project, or make a baby blanket using as many "granny squares no 5" as needed. Give power to your imagination.

Granny Square No 3 - Mesh - For Foggy Dawn Sweater Project

Here is another detailed video tutorial of #3 mesh granny square for crocheters for our Foggy Dawn Sweater Project. If you would like to make this sweater, click on the link "Introduction to this project" below OR on one of the two links for a PLAYLIST (left-handed or right-handed crocheters), to crochet along. My videos are quite detailed for anyone that needs help with crocheting. But if you are more experienced, use it just as a reference and skip some of the parts so you don't get too bored.

Use this pattern for any project - my sweater, a granny square blanket, or any other project that requires crocheted squares.

To crochet this square, you need to know how to crochet chain, slip stitch, single crochet stitch, and double crochet stitch.

Crocheted Box Stitch Pattern

As a knit and crochet teacher I have to solve "puzzles" for my students quite often. Please understand, that word "puzzles" may refer to helping others to read graphs, fix errors, or "translate" written pattern to a simple/understandable version. On Thursday, I was asked to solve one of those "not-completely-clear-patterns", when my very talented and very advanced student, Sarah (who by the way makes beautifully crocheted toys, blankets, etc.), brought in a print of crochet directions from "my picot" website - FYI, it was THIS ONE. I wanted to help her out, but due to several distractions, we had to abandon the idea of trying to decipher the written pattern right then and there. Other ladies needed my help and there was not enough time for me to do it. So I told her I'd figure it at home and show her how to do it at our next meeting.

But then, at home, I thought - I should make an educational video! Not just for Sarah, but for all my fab virtual artsy and crafty fans.

As I was reading the above mentioned written pattern (click on the link to see it) and looking at its chart, I realized that I would like to alter the pattern - simplify it. When I started to do repeats I realized, there will be no need for one of the rows. It only not eliminated the usage of some of the yarn, but also the crocheting got less time-consuming. Then according to a chart, I was supposed to turn my crocheted piece at the end of each row. But I changed that too - I just kept crocheting in the rounds, which meant to "rewrite" the pattern in my head (and now also on the virtual paper).

Continue working as many 3-row repeats as you wish in a similar manner as in Rnds 8-10, except keep in mind that in each first round of 3-round repeat you will have always one extra "V" stitch between corner clusters. The corners will always have 2 clusters, while "V" stitches will have only one cluster. These extra "V" stitches will make your item bigger and bigger.

If you want to make a blanket then just keep adding the "V" stitches on the sides in each first row of a 3-row repeat. When you are finished, weave in all the ends.

Candy Blanket

In my last post, I told you about a lady who donated a bag of yarn, which a couple of my knitting and crocheting ladies and I are utilizing for the gift prizes for summer reading in Bridgeport Public Library.
Today I share with you another free pattern where I used 2 big skeins for my project - a blanket (a lap blanket's usual size is about 35″ by 40″ and a kid's/baby blanket usually measures about 30″ by 36″.)
I chose these two skeins because they looked nice together, and as I progressed with my knitting I was loving the blanket more and more. The blanket colors look so yummy, and the pattern looks actually 3D - almost like I knitted cables.

I started on 158 sts and I was a little scared that I would not have enough yarn. Especially because the yarn was donated and I was not sure if I would be able to buy same yarn if I would run out. I am now finished and it turned out OK (see the measurements below). If you want to start on the same number of stitches and you would like to have your blanket a bit longer, you may need to buy more yarn than just one skein of each color (2 skeins total). You could also start with a lower number of repeats and make the blanket narrower.

BTW - you could use this pattern for a scarf too because the wrong side looks very nice also. It is reversible. You would have to knit about six to nine "6-stitch" repeats (depending on how wide you would want your scarf) plus few extra stitches for the side edges and as many 12-row repeats as you want (again depending on how long you'd want to make your scarf).

Circular Knitting Needles - US Size #10 (6 mm)
markers for the repeating pattern (I used my own handmade yarn markers)
Hook 6 mm
Yarn Needle for weaving in the ends (optional, you could use your hook instead)

Abbreviations:

Close-up of the pattern - each stripe is 12-row/6-stitch repeat

CO - cast on
K - knit
P - purl
MC - main color yarn (yellow)
CC - complimentary color (peach)
pm - place marker
mm - move marker
BO - bind off

Step-by-Step:

This pattern requires 12-row/6-stitch repeats. Note: This pattern is written for 24 6-stitch repeats. However, you can choose your own # of 6-stitch repeats

With MC yarn CO multiple of 6 sts plus 14 sts for 2 edges (each edge will have 7 sts). I casted on 158 sts (24 repeats of 6 sts = 144, plus 7 sts for each edge; 144 sts + 14 sts = total 158 sts)

Row 1-? (MC) K158
Note: Knit as many rows of your bottom edge as you wish, I knitted 8 rows

Pattern:

Repeat the below pattern as many times as you want - alternating 12 rows in CC with 12 rows in MC, and finishing with 12 rows in CC.
I will start row count from the beginning again (from #1). As you are knitting the first row, place markers for reference between your repeats - it will be easier to keep the track of your repetitions and what stitches you are supposed to knit. This work requires attention and concentration on your knit and purl stitches - great for our brains. I made my markers from a different color yarn, but you can use your preferred markers.

Blanket - for baby, kid, or for your lap

Use CC yarn:

Row 1 K7, pm; *[P2, K4, pm]* - repeat from * to * 24x (or your # of repeats); K7
Row 2 K7, mm; *[P4, K2, mm]* - repeat from * to * 24x (or your # of repeats); K7
Row 3 K7, mm; *[P2, K4, mm]* - repeat from * to * 24x (or your # of repeats); K7
Row 4 K7, mm; *[P4, K2, mm]* - repeat from * to * 24x (or your # of repeats); K7

Row 5 K7, mm; *[K2, P2, K2, mm]* - repeat from * to * 24x (or your # of repeats); K7
Row 6 K7, mm; *[P2, K2, P2 mm]* - repeat from * to * 24x (or your # of repeats); K7
Row 7 K7, mm; *[K2, P2, K2, mm]* - repeat from * to * 24x (or your # of repeats); K7
Row 8 K7, mm; *[P2, K2, P2 mm]* - repeat from * to * 24x (or your # of repeats); K7

Row 9 K7, mm; *[K4, P2, mm]* - repeat from * to * 24x (or your # of repeats); K7
Row 10 K7, mm; *[K2, P4, mm]* - repeat from * to * 24x (or your # of repeats); K7
Row 11 K7, mm; *[K4, P2, mm]* - repeat from * to * 24x (or your # of repeats); K7
Row 12 K7, mm; *[K2, P4, mm]* - repeat from * to * 24x (or your # of repeats); K7

Now repeat 12 rows above in MC yarn, after that again repeat 12 rows above in CC, and so on... Finish 12-row repeats with CC yarn.

12-row/6-stitch repeat (without edges)

Finishing:

Finish the blanket with the same number of rows as in the beginning. Let's start row count from 1 again.

Row 1-? (MC) K158
Note: Knit as many rows for the end edge as you wish, I knitted 8 rows as in the beginning. BO last row. Finish crocheting single crochet stitches (or back stitches) around the entire perimeter with CC and to conceal your color changes of each 12-row panel as well. Do not make your edge too tight.

Crochet around the side edges

Both sides look nice - I consider this blanket reversible

Baby Blue Blanket And Scarf - Lacy Patterns

Many of you know that my passion lays in art, knitting, and crocheting. My brain is thinking about creating something all the time. Even in my dreams.
When I saw many different types of variegated yarns from various makers, I thought it would be wonderful to knit a beautiful baby blanket in a lace pattern with lovely color changes. I wanted a design that would make this baby blanket look luxurious yet that it would be relatively easy to knit for a wider group of knitters.
I found a chart for a beautiful lacy pattern and made a couple of changes to it; then I graphed it again. While I filmed a detailed video, I wrote a pattern simultaneously (in between the takes) for a blanket and a scarf.
You can use practically any yarn weight for this project. For my scarf and baby blanket, I used yarn of medium weight (#4) and US needles #8 (5 mm). If you decide to knit a blanket, scarf or any other item from a thinner yarn, you will have to do more stitch and row repeats.
