Earth Day Shawl - When You Take A Variegated Yarn And Use A Granny Square Pattern No 6

 

I bought a beautiful variegated green-brown yarn by Plymouth Yarns and I had it stashed away for like three years. About a year ago I pulled my yarn out from my hiding place, I took my granny square pattern number six and started crocheting my newest project. First I wanted to make a poncho. But then I decided that a shawl will be better for me since I could wrap it around or use it as a wide scarf.

I realized I am on the right track to creating something beautiful as soon as I attached few squares together - I attached each square immediately to the one already finished - see my videos for righties and lefties. The way the colors blended and came together I knew I will hold soon (well actually as soon as I finish) an elegant and alluring piece of garment. 

If you would like to work on this project be aware that, unfortunately, they do not make this yarn anymore. That is what happens when we hide your yarns away from our husbands for too long 😉and you forget about them. But, I found a replacement of similar yarns for you - click HERE.  One of the yarns they suggest is Lana Grossa, which I love a lot. Recently I finished a couple of projects using Lana Grossa yarns and I am using another type of their yarns to knit a blouse for my petite daughter. Don't forget to scroll down to see many other choices. Maybe you will like the idea of using Madelintosh yarns. Or try to find online "one-ply lace yarn" that is baby alpaca/merino blend and that is variegated.

Anyway... I used my granny square #6 design (a link for the pattern is below) to turn these squares into a wide and long rectangle. I used 84 squares - 6 squares along the width of the shawl and 14 squares along the length. I still may do the 15th row to make my shawl even longer since I have about 1/2 a ball leftover.

I can also envision a really gorgeous baby blanket using this granny square. Or a throw. Or a scarf. You could make your own version of this design.

"V-Neckline" Granny Square Half - For Foggy Dawn Sweater Project

WOW, I cannot believe that I forgot to publish my granny square #7 for the neckline area - the triangle (also called the "V") part. And it has been a year since I published a written pattern for Granny Square #6  😲!!! I just made a Granny Square #7 video tutorial last year, but never published the written pattern. OK, it is time to fix it. 

In this square (actually rather a triangle) I decided to use many tiny triangles within a big triangle. You can flip it (use the "wrong side") for the other side of the sweater, or crochet sloping (diagonal) line on the opposite side (you may have to figure that one on your own). 

Also if your arms are heavier than mine (mine are close to the toothpick size, well not really, but they are rather thinner than most of the people) make an insert under the arm. I videotaped how to do that and will publish this soon. 

Sorry, my dear crocheters it took so long - I got sidetracked. I do that often. Too many ideas in my head.

Granny Square No 5 - Flower

Today I am publishing another granny square for my crocheted "Foggy Dawn Sweater Project," this time it is a "Granny Square No 5". Just like Channel perfume No 5, it is feminine and romantic. This square has a 3D feel to it, with the flower centerpiece. It is not difficult once you understand the concept. I have a quite detailed (what else is new?) video that will help you with grasping the construction of this design. I am sure many of you, who are fairly new to crocheting, saw variations of this 3D flower and wondered how it is done. Do not let anything stop you from crocheting this 3D square. You can use it in any project no matter what weight of yarn, yarn type or color you chose. Use it for my sweater project, or make a baby blanket using as many "granny squares no 5" as needed. Give power to your imagination.

Granny Square No 4 - Shell Stitch - For Foggy Dawn Sweater Project

Another detailed video tutorial of our granny square for crocheters for our Foggy Dawn Sweater Project - this time it is a #4 shell stitch square. If you would like to make this sweater, click on the link "Introduction to this project" (see my link below) OR on one of the two links for a PLAYLIST (left-handed OR right-handed crocheters) so you can crochet along. All of my videos are quite detailed for anyone that needs help with crocheting. But if you are more experienced, use it just as a reference and skip over the parts that you know how to do - this way you don't get too bored.

Granny Square No 2 - Corner 2 Corner - For Foggy Dawn Sweater

In today's post, I will introduce to you my second granny square for "Foggy Dawn" sweater. This "corner to corner" granny square is unusual, and although as you crochet this square it may seem that it is a diamond - but proper stretching by hand or blocking will help you shape it into a square.
You have to know how to crochet: chain, sl st, single crochet, double crochet, and puff stitch. You can follow my written pattern or crochet along my video (see links below).

Granny Square No. 1 For Foggy Dawn Sweater

In my last post, I wrote about "Introduction To Crocheted Sweater 'Foggy Dawn'". There, I published links to videos where I am demonstrating how to join granny squares used for this project.

Today, I will introduce my first granny square for "Foggy Dawn" sweater. Please, take your time and read few pointers (I will talk about them in my videos as well), which I figured out later while I worked on my project, and which lead to my realization that I have to rework parts of my sweater or rejoin squares.
As I mentioned in my "Intro" post you need to attach each "granny" to another one as you go.

So here are tips that will make your work easier:

• If you are a right-handed crocheter, you should start attaching rows from left to right, and then top down. If you are a left-handed crocheter then you should join squares right to left & from the top down. Start with the back first - from one end of your arm to the other. (Note: I started attaching squares haphazardly and it got more difficult to fit some of them later) 
• If you are using several colors, make sure that your colors alternate in the best possible way. Plan each square color ahead of time - draw a diagram of your sweater and fill the colors into each square as you would like them on your finished project.
• Try to alternate your different type of squares so they are also visually pleasing to the eye. Number your squares and write those numbers into each square of your diagram.
• Leave weaving your tails (ends) as the last task, just in case you need to re-work your joining.

Have fun creating something beautiful. You can use these squares not just for a sweater, but also for blankies, vests, purses (for a purse you would need to sew in a liner), etc.

Introduction To Crocheted Sweater "Foggy Dawn" Using Openwork Granny Squares Plus Attaching Squares

I get a lot of requests to demonstrate knitting or crocheting items. My wonderful crafters send me images, but often I cannot fulfill their wishes due to copyright issues. If I choose to work on the project, I have to redesign the idea, knit/crochet, videotape, edit the video, take images and edit them, upload, share and answer questions on social media, etc.
Large projects can take up to 2-3 months to finish, small projects 2-7 days. It would take less time if I had a team. Unfortunately, I do not have funds to pay people for their work to help me satisfy all the requests.

However, occasionally I work on a request because I like an idea or an image/inspiration. Sometimes I find errors in patterns, so I fix them, then write changes down and publish them.

While working on "Foggy Dawn Sweater" I altered a couple of granny squares, and I also designed other granny squares so readers (and video viewers) would have plenty to chose from while creating their own personalized sweater.
All squares should be pretty much the same size. Use any combination of granny squares you'd love to have in the sweater.

I used four (slightly different) colors as in the image, which my friend Maureen sent me, but you may choose to make this sweater from only one color. Or two. Or, you could use variegated yarn or even a multicolor yarn.

If you do not want to make a sweater, you can use granny squares to make a vest or a blanket.
I used sport weight yarn (#3) and each square's side is about 6".

Also, be aware, that each square has to be attached as soon as you are finishing its last "edge row" - except the first square, which needs to be finished in its entirety. You cannot make these squares ahead of time unless you decide to "sew them together" instead of "crocheting them together" (as I do in my videos).

Attaching Granny Squares with a Cable Stitch

A couple of years ago I made a video "How To Attach Granny Squares With Cable Stitch," which is very popular with my fans. A lady asked me to write a pattern for it because sometimes there is no Internet connection in her area and she would like to print it. So here we go.

Of course, for materials, you will use same hook and same yarn brand for your Cable Stitch as you used for crocheting your granny squares. Use your choice of color.

Step 2          WORK ON THE SECOND SQUARE: do the same as in Step 1 along 3 sides and 2 corners, you will attach first 3rd corner, then one side, and lastly 4th corner (total 2 corners and 1 side) as such: when you make your ch3 after your last sc on the 3rd side make 1 sc into 3rd corner, make ch2, take hook out of the stitch, with both Gsqs facing right way up, insert to hook from right side into the corner so it comes out on the wrong side, grab the loop of your last stitch, pull it through the loop onto the right side, and make another ch (total 3 chains), then make sc in the same corner of the unfinished Gsq; now you will be joining/attaching both sides - one finished and one unfinished: make ch2, line up the finished Gsq (make sure they are not twisted and are facing with RS up) and insert your hook into the first loop of your finished Gsq (the one right after the corner), and join with another chain st - same way as you joined the corner. Continue as such along the sides until you come to the fourth corner, and you will attach again by the same method as you did in the third corner, lastly join with a slip stitch into the 3rd ch stitch of your initial ch3.

Step 3          Attach a row of Gsqs = repeat Step 2 as many times as you want (for your desired number of squares in a row)

  

Step 4         When working on the next rows, you will attach the first square in each row on one side just like in Step 2, but the next consecutive Gsqs will be attached on 3 corners and 2 sides - use the same technique as in step 2, except you will have to continue with 1 more side and 1 more corner (thus 2 sides and 3 corners)

The direction of attaching the 2 sides and 3 corners from #1 to #5
(left handed crocheters from #5 to #1)
